Shakira is finally able to “savour all those little moments”.

The 36-year-old pop songstress celebrated her son Milan’s first birthday on January 22.

And she is amazed by how much her life has altered since becoming a mother.

"Everything is different," she told People magazine.

"Maybe the biggest change is that I think about the future more, what the world will be like for him when he grows up.

But when it comes to living, it's all about the present.

"I'm finally able to really savour all of those little moments that, in the early days of my career, I was too busy thinking about the next thing to just stop, take it all in, and enjoy."

Shakira is also grateful about how parenthood has positively influenced her music.

The star will release her 10th self-titled album this year, and she believes her sound has transformed.

"Luckily, since my last album [Sale el Sol] I've entered one of the happiest phases of my life. It was definitely a time of change, of rebirth, of self-discovery ... and of course, becoming a mother, which turned my world on its head in the best of ways," she explained.

"I'm always looking for that song I still haven't written, new sounds ... music has infinite possibilities, more than I can explore in a lifetime. I'm grateful to still be as passionate about doing what I do."

Shakira recently released a sexy duet with Rihanna entitled Can’t Remember to Forget You.

The Colombian star shares baby Milan with her professional football player Gerard Piqué.
