Award-winning experimental orchestra Tonic Fold return with their third album, ‘The Violent Language of Portraits’, due for release 4th February, 2014.

The brainchild of acclaimed composer Shane Cullinan, Tonic Fold is an intricate combination of a 20 piece orchestra, drums, bass, guitar and piano, featuring vocals from soloists as diverse as the eminent soul singer David McAlmont, the actor Chris New, West End star Rachel Tucker, and the much loved actress Kathy Burke, in her first collaboration of this kind.

Rendering pop and rock sensibilities with dramatic arrangements, ‘The Violent Language of Portraits’ is vibrant, emotionally charged and carefully layered. Tonic Fold straddle both the classical and contemporary world with dexterity, creating songs that are simultaneously cinematic and raw.

A multifaceted, genre-flirting endeavour, the album delivers a nuanced spectrum of tracks, each of them an individual “portrait”. ‘Let Lay’, featuring David McAlmont, is a homage to the life and work of The Sunday Times’ war correspondent Marie Colvin, killed while reporting from the uprising in Syria last year. ‘Bacon’s Pope’, featuring Chris New, is an interpretation of the mind and vision that Francis Bacon assumed whilst creating his haunting portrait of Pope Innocent X, one of his most famous paintings. ‘Skin’, featuring Kathy Burke, tells the story of an individual absorbed in grief from the apparent disappearance of her lover, blurring the lines between the reality of sorrow and full blown psychotic delusions.

Cullinan’s multi-disciplinary musical spectacles are already celebrated. A few years ago his orchestral drama The Pieta - featuring the leading stage, TV and film actress Frances Barber - was a critical success, attracting positive reviews across the press and carving out his place as one of London’s most dynamic young composers.

Individually, Tonic Fold’s members have worked with The Divine Comedy, Beth Orton, English National Opera, KT Tunstall, Paul McCartney, London Symphony Orchestra, Florence & The Machine, Rod Stewart, Paul Weller, to name a few.
The lead single from ‘The Violent Language of Portraits’ is ‘Manaway’ featuring Jess Greenfield - host/listen to the free download here.

Tonic Fold are set to complement the album release with two live performances:

29th January 2014 – St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden
27th February 2014 – Bush Hall, Shepherd’s Bush
