Lily Allen thought fame would be brilliant so was disappointed to find herself surrounded by “sterile f**king Botoxed idiots that stank of desperation”.

The British singer announced her retirement from the industry four years ago, although she made a comeback this year with her single Hard out Here.

She has explained why she turned her back on the showbiz lifestyle, insisting it was very different to what she expected.

“I was at the end of my tether. I’d had enough of people constantly hacking at me. And I think once you’re exhausted physically and mentally, it does get you down,” she told Esquire magazine.

“I feel like when I was growing up and dreaming of being a pop star, it was the days of Britpop when things felt authentic and anarchic and people were taking drugs and having a lot of fun and having sex with each other.

“So excuse me if I found it a bit disappointing when I arrived and it was a bunch of sterile f**king Botoxed idiots that stank of desperation.”

During her time off Lily raised the two daughters she has with her husband Sam Cooper. However, motherhood wasn’t without its issues for the 28-year-old star.

Although she was thrilled to be starting a family with her spouse, many of the people the singer thought she could count on weren’t there for her.

“I thought the people in that showbiz circle were my friends. But almost the second I got pregnant and I wasn’t able to go out and party, they were suddenly quite nasty,” she explained.

“There’s a way that those people survive and it’s not by being nice. The way they make themselves feel powerful is to ostracise other people.”

The star claims to feel “blessed” now that she realises those people weren’t really her pals. However, she still finds going to industry events hard as she feels judged by others and claims some people laugh at her.
