Miley Cyrus admits she was once “scared” to leave ex-fiance Liam Hemsworth.

The Wrecking Ball singer, 21, ended her engagement with The Hunger Games star in September.

And Miley has shed new light on what went wrong in their relationship.

“I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think, conquering that fear, this year, was actually bigger than any other transition that I had, this entire year,” she revealed during an interview with Barbara Walters for her ABC special Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013.

“I don't ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like, without them, you can't be yourself,” she added.

The former Disney star, who caused a stir at this year’s MTV Video Music Award’s by twerking against fellow singer Robin Thicke, said she did love Liam, 23, but now that she's single she can “actually be happy”.

Miley also hinted her young age was part of the reason the relationship failed.

“I don't think I realised what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn't change being engaged,” she said.

“It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years. But now…I wait for those moments of silence, when I'm just at my house, by myself.”

Asked by Barbara if she'll ever get married, Miley replied, “I think I'll want that in the times that it needs to be”.

She and Liam began dating on and off from June 2009 after meeting on the set of the film The Last Song.
After announcing their engagement in June 2012, the couple called it quits officially three months ago.
