The Australian Financial Review has named Gurrumul Yunupingu the top of the Cultural Power List and Mona Foma owner David Walsh is at number two.
Gurrumul took the top spot because according to the AFR, “In an industry filled with ersatz performers who flame out as quickly as it takes to download an MP3, Yunupingu has quietly become an enduring international phenomenon.”
Gurrumul’s latest project was the official launch of the Gurrumul Yunupingu Foundation. The foundation will continue a legacy of Aboriginal knowledge, achievement and opportunity.
Delta Goodrem offered the first pledge to the foundation who, together with Gurrumul, recorded ‘Bayini Live’ earlier this year and donated all proceeds to the Gurrumul Yunupingu Foundation.
The Australian Financial Review ranked Walsh second because, “Such is the pull of Walsh’s Museum of Old and New Art that all he need do is unlock the front door and entry to the power list seems assured. MONA has spiced up Tasmania’s tourist offering and after three years its one millionth visitor is nigh”.
