Scarlett Johansson’s deep voice left her sounding like “a chain-smoking fool” as a child.

The 28-year-old actress has been reminiscing about her youth and admits that she was rejected by children’s agents.

But the savvy star quickly grew a thick skin, and even used the knockbacks to her advantage.

“I was always terrible at commercials because my voice was so deep. At the age of nine, I sounded like a whiskey-drinking, chain-smoking fool. Wasn’t going to sell Jell-O with that voice.

“There was someone in my older brother’s class who was doing some commercials so my mom took me to that kid’s agent. They didn’t want me though, I was devastated. I thought it was the end of my career. And that’s when I realised that by crying I could get whatever I wanted,” she confessed to Interview Magazine.

From then on Scarlett knew acting was for her, which led to poor grades at school.

In her school SAT exams she didn’t even answer half of the maths questions.

But low grades didn’t stop The Avengers actress pursuing her passion.

“I was a big song-and-dance type of kid - you know, one of those kids with jazz hands. I liked to improvise and do weird vocal exercises. I was a major ham - if you can believe!” she said.

But the trappings of fame haven’t been easy for the movie actress to get used to.

She recently told website refinery29 that fame can often be a “drag.”
