Carrie Underwood's husband has "never been romantic".

The country singer married hockey player Mike Fisher in a glitzy ceremony in 2010.

Whereas they had a big wedding at The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation, Mike normally keeps things low key in their relationship.

"He never was [romantic]!" she laughed to the British edition of OK! magazine.

"His brain is like most men's, he just doesn't think that way. But it makes those little gestures he does do very special. Sometimes I prompt him and say, 'For my birthday I want something romantic.' He then has to figure out what to do and put the effort in."

Their relationship is still in the early stages and the pretty blonde is very much in love with her sportsman spouse.

However, they do have to work at keeping the spark alive.

"We've only been married three years in July, so we're still in our honeymoon phase and, because he's a professional hockey player, we both travel so much so when we do see each other it's really nice," she smiled.

"We might only be together for two or three days after a month apart, but it makes it fun. I get dressed up and we go out for dinner and flirt with each other."
