Adam Levine was never considered a "stud" before he found fame.

The lead singer of Maroon 5 is known for his brooding dark looks and sexy songs such as She Will Be Loved.

The 34-year-old may have dated a string of models since finding fame, but he wasn't always so popular with the opposite sex.

"I never had any issues there. But I wasn't a stud, the guy that was getting all the girls. I did OK," he modestly assured the British edition of OK! magazine.

"It seems to me that when somebody doesn't have much luck with the ladies and then [fame] happens to them, it can really mess with their heads. They hate women in a way like, 'Well, you didn't like me back then,' all that bulls**t."

Adam burst onto the music scene with his band in 2004, releasing hit single This Love.

Since then, Maroon 5 have continued to achieve chart success and Adam has acted as a mentor on US TV show The Voice and has even done some acting work.

Whereas he has remained humble, the heartthrob believes fame has the ability to change people for the worse.

"Someone once said that celebrity acts as a truth serum - whatever your true nature is, it will be magnified upon you receiving any sort of fame," he explained.

"That's totally true. Your best and worst aspects of your character are going to be exposed. So if someone's a bad person, they'll be an extremely rich, extremely famous bad person and probably a lot worse than they would have been otherwise. I'm not a nasty person."
