Carly Rae Jepsen has described her Canadian Idol experience as “intense.”

The 27-year-old singer took part in the TV talent contest back in 2007 when she placed third to season winner Brian Melo.

Carly Rae remembers her stint on the show as being particularly emotional, and she sympathises with the current crop of American Idol wannabes.

"I remember being on Idol myself. It was one of the most intense boot camps of all time, but also one of the best experiences of my life," she told MTV News. "I'm really feeling for all of the contestants and hoping that they're enjoying this process.”

Despite admitting she hasn’t caught too much of this season’s contest, the singer hopes judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj aren’t being overly critical towards the contestants.

"I always find the people who have the most harsh opinions to be the most entertaining, but I think that there is something to be said about needing to be constructive,” she declared.

“So I'm hoping that [is the case]. I can remember being in that position. It was always terrifying when the mean judge from Canada would say his piece, so I hope that she's being sweet to them as well. And knowing Nicki, I'm sure she is."

This week the star launched the Perfect Harmony video series in league with Coca Cola, which brings together talented aspiring artists from across the country to help write a track with the singer.

Carly Rae will then perform the song on the American Idol finale show this May.
