Mumford & Sons took home the top Grammy for album of the year on Sunday night.
The British folk band was nominated for six awards and took the most coveted home with their sophomore release, Babel.
Musicians Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Country Winston and Ted Dwayne were underdogs in the category.
Also nominated were Jack White (Blunderbuss), Frank Ocean (Channel Orange), Fun. (Some Nights) and The Black Keys (El Camino).
The win marked the second of the evening for the act. Earlier in the afternoon, Mumford & Sons won their first ever Grammy in the long-form video category for Big Easy Express.
Fun. was also a big winner at the 55th annual ceremony. The group took home song of the year with their hit single We Are Young with Janelle Monae. They beat Frank Ocean, The Lumineers, Hunter Hayes and Alabama Shakes to win best new artist. It was a marked turn for the musicians, who have been playing based out of New York for the last decade.
Lead singer Nate Ruess took the opportunity to laugh at the irony of the band’s long road to stardom as he took the stage to accept the award.
“This (broadcast) is in HD, you can see our faces, and we are not young,” he said, pointing to bandmates Jack Antonoff and Andrew Dost.
Fun. later conceded a loss to Kelly Clarkson in the best pop solo album category. The American Idol favourite won for her album Stronger but paid tribute to the band while accepting the honour.
"Fun, I've been covering you all summer. I love that song,” she said.
Also winning during the three-hour telecast from Los Angeles’ Staples Center were Gotye and Kimbra. The pair took home the Grammy for record of the year with their hit single Somebody That I Use to Know.
Adele’s trip from her native Britain proved worthwhile as she won the Grammy for best pop solo performance for Set Fire to the Rain (Live).
Carrie Underwood also took home best country solo performance.
Other early winners included Beyonce (best traditional R&B performance, Love On Top), Jay-Z and Kanye West (best rap performance for N****s In Paris), Rihanna (best short form music video for We Found Love featuring Calvin Harris) and Taylor Swift (best song written for visual media for Hunger Games track Safe & Sound featuring The Civil Wars).
The musicians kept the Staples Center rocking with a host of live performances.
Taylor Swift kicked off the show with a carnival-themed production and her hit single We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.
Elton John, T Bone Burnett, the Zac Brown Band, Mavis Staples, Mumford & Sons and the Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard shared the stage for an all-star performance of The Weight.
Fun. performed Carry On and there were duets by Wiz Khalifa and Miguel, and Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley.
Justin Timberlake returned to the stage for the first time in four years. The SexyBack singer was joined by Jay-Z for a retro rendition of his single Suit & Tie and new song Pusher Love Girl.
There was also a tribute to music great Bob Marley. Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Sting joined Ziggy and Damian Marley for the jam session and the musicians got the star-studded crowd to their feet.
The 55th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony was hosted by LL Cool J.
