An evening of entertainment hosted by David Gest in celebration of legendary soul singer Edwin Starr’s music and commemorating the tenth anniversary of his death.

The late great Edwin Starr was the UK’s favourite adopted Soul son. Rightly revered for the storming protest classic, War (1970), Edwin Starr didn't really need another hit to achieve legendary status in soul circles, so electrifying was that single performance. A hero on England’s Northern Soul circuit, Starr continued to give astonishing live shows right up to his death at the age of 61 and with his exhilarating band "The Team", they cemented their reputation as an outstanding live act rarely matched.

On the 2nd April, in a fitting tribute to the man, the legend, iconic London venue The Jazz Café, will play host to a celebratory evening of his life and music, 10 years to the day of his untimely death in 2003. Hosted by television star, award winning producer and close friend to Edwin, David Gest, The Team, with Edwin's younger brother Angelo on lead vocals, will lead the tributes along with a host of Edwin's friends, peers and special guests.

Starr first made his name as Agent Double-O-Soul (1965). When his contract was transferred to the legendary record label Motown, he instantly became one of the more dynamic vocalists on the crossover-friendly label, with his debt to James Brown and the Stax soul shouters. He enjoyed a run of hits including Twenty Five Miles (1969), Way Over There (1969), I’m Still A Struggling Man (1969) and the timeless classic, War (1970). He also successfully rode the Disco boom which won him a whole new audience with classic dance records like Contact (1979), H.A.P.P.Y Radio (1979) and Get Up Whirlpool (1980).

In an evening where tributes will flow and emotions run high, what better person to lead the celebrations than Edwin’s younger brother Angelo. A singer and multi-instrumentalist in his own right, Angelo has fronted The Team since Edwin’s death having worked with the likes of Alexander O’Neal, Lemar and The Funk Brothers.

Edwin left us a decade ago – but his music lives on. And his band, THE TEAM are "Keeping The Faith”.

Tickets are £15 in advance. £18 on door
