National radio station Absolute Radio hosted an exclusive session with 2012 Mercury Music Prize winners alt-J, in the intimacy of their own studios on 23rd January 2013.
The indie rock quartet were represented by lead singer Joe Newman and Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards) leaving Gwil Sainsbury (guitarist/bassist) and Thom Green (drums) to relax at home.
The duo performed acoustic renditions of ‘Something Good’, ‘Tessellate’ and ‘Breezeblocks’ from their debut studio album - ‘An Awesome Wave’, the record which took the 2012 Mercury Music Prize and saw off efforts from the likes of Ben Howard, Lianne la Havas and Jessie Ware among others.
A select crowd filled with competition winners and friends of Absolute Radio claimed their place to see alt-J perform in the same space as the likes of Coldplay, Paul Weller, Elvis Costello, Kasabian, Lana Del Rey, Richard Ashcroft and Stereophonics who have graced the Absolute Radio studios before them.
Absolute Radio Hometime DJ Geoff Lloyd introduced the guys on stage before heading off for a chat in the studio. He said “It’s great to welcome alt-J having been propelled into the limelight following their Mercury Music Prize win. They were right at home in the Absolute Radio studios and the intimate session was a real treat for fans.”
A special programme featuring interview and session clips will be broadcast on the Geoff Lloyd Hometime Show on Absolute Radio on 31st January from 7-8pm and again on 3rd February from 10pm for the stations Sunday Night Music Club show.
