Alanis Morissette was suffocated by her fame in the Nineties.
The Canadian musician enjoyed superstardom with the 1995 release of her album Jagged Little Pill.
She remembers superfans cutting off locks of her hair, hiding behind trees and stealing things from her hotel room just to get close to her.
“I couldn’t breathe. People would jump on the car when you were trying to leave somewhere - it was the kind of thing you’d see in the movies,” she told British newspaper The Sun.
Alanis is back on the music scene with the release of her EP Havoc and Bright Lights following a four-year hiatus.
But the 38-year-old singer/songwriter says a lot has changed about being a celebrity since her heyday and she’s not sure she could cope with the same level of fame again.
“Nowadays, there’s paparazzi everywhere. In the Nineties, there was paparazzi but less. You could walk around in your sweatpants and not worry,” she said.
The star admires musicians Lady Gaga and Katy Perry who manage to deal with being in the spotlight 24 hours a day because she would have “self-destructed”.
Alanis is now happily married to rapper Mario “MC Souleye” Treadway. The couple share one child, a baby boy named Ever who will celebrate his second birthday on December 25.
