Missy Elliott has explained why she didn’t want to be involved in a "really sensitive" Aaliyah album.
Drake has confirmed he is working on the record, a decade after the singer died in a plane crash. He thinks people should be excited about hearing “13, 14 new songs” from the star, but many in the industry feel the project shouldn’t go ahead.
There have been reports Aaliyah’s loved ones are unhappy with the plan and Missy thinks their wishes should be paramount.
“My response would be a little different because I have to respect her family," Missy explained to radio station Hot 97. "Until they come and say we’re ready to do an Aaliyah album, then I don’t really want to try and get into that because it’s really sensitive.”
Missy wonders if Aaliyah's unfinished recordings are that way for a reason. As a veteran in the industry she feels it is right to honour the status of these tracks the way Aaliyah left them, in case the late star never wanted them released.
“We’re talking about unfinished music and we don’t know her reasoning for not putting those records out,” Missy continued. “Maybe she didn’t feel like they were her best work. We don’t want to tap into that. It’s spiritually something else, very, very touchy - unless her parents came in and conducted that.”
