Randy Jackson is officially leaving the American Idol panel, according to a new report.

The music star has been a judge on the TV show since it started in 2002. There has been speculation he might be taking on a new role recently, following the departure of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

TMZ claims Randy will move to a mentoring position, as has been widely reported.

“Sources connected to Idol tell us... there's some concern among the brass that Jackson is not well-suited for the mentor role... but they feel they need him because he's the glue that helps keep the show together,” reports the site.

Mariah Carey has been confirmed as one of the show’s new judges. Many other names have been linked to the panel, with suggestions Nicki Minaj is likely to be unveiled as a new signing in a matter of weeks.

The site claims her deal is “99% done”, even though Mariah isn’t sure she is the right choice. Show bosses apparently hope the two women will have a tumultuous relationship, adding to ratings.

In a further shake-up it’s thought there will be four seats on the panel this time around, with the new position likely filled by a country music star.

P. Diddy and Kanye West were previously linked to the show, but have apparently been ruled out. Other stars believed to be in the running include Keith Urban, Nick Jonas, Enrique Iglesias and Pharrell Williams.
