John Mayer is elated to be releasing his new album in light of his recent health challenges.

The Gravity singer had surgery on a granuloma, a growth on his tonsils, in October 2011. The malignancy recurred a few months ago and the musician was forced to cancel his 21-date Spring 2012 tour across America.

Although John can’t perform concerts until he has fully recuperated from his malady, People magazine reports that the singer is excited about releasing his record Born and Raised next week.

“I'm just so proud that it's almost out,” John said in an interview hosted at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. “There comes a time [when] making a record [that] you forget anyone is ever going to hear it because it seems so far off.”

Although he is unable to sing currently, John is intent on composing new music.

“I've been thinking I'll record in July and August. I'm already writing – I've got nothing else to do,” he shared.

“Whether or not I can sing, there's a way I can see the world right now that I won't again. And if you're a writer, you write the way you can see the world at that moment.”

Born and Raised will be released on May 22.
