The Green Day musical ‘American Idiot’ will open in Los Angeles next week.

‘American Idiot’ features the music of Green Day and is based around their 2000 album. It also features the unreleased Green Day song ‘When It’s Time’.

‘American Idiot’ first opened on Broadway on April 20, 2010. Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong made a guest appearance in the role of St Jimmy for a week in September, 2010. Melissa Etheridge appeared as St Jimmy from February 1 to 6, 2011 and AFI’s Davey Havok did it from March 1 to 15, 2011. Armstrong returned to the role for the final three weeks of the Broadway season.

The show itself is about a group of suburban youths living in Jingletown, USA and saturated with TV. Fred up with life, they rebel.

‘American Idiot’ has won six awards from 20 nominations. It has collected two Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Lighting Design of a Musical and has also been nominated for Best Musical. However, the Tony Awards deemed it ineligible for a Best Original Score nomination because less than 50% of the music was written for the stage show.

‘American Idiot’ is on at the Ahmanson Theatre from March 13 until April 22.
