Foo Fighters mainman Dave Grohl continues his lifelong career of coolness by drumming for Cage the Elephant.

Kentucky rock sensation Cage The Elephant have been supporting the Foo Fighters across the US on their Wasting Light tour.

Unfortunately their drummer Jared Champion’s appendix burst last Monday night, leading to an emergency hospitalisation.

But the show must go on, and Spin reports that Grohl offered to man the kit for the band’s opening set during the Salt Lake City show.

Cage The Elephant guitarist Lincoln Parish told Spin, “Dave somehow heard what had happened and called our tour manager. He said, ‘Hey, so do you think the guys would go for it?’ Our manager was like… ‘Um, yeah!!!‘”

While the monitor engineer filled in for most of the set, Grohl took up the sticks for the songs he knew: ‘In One Ear’, ‘Shake Me Down’, Sell Yourself’, and ‘Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked’.

Parish said of the experience, “I had to pinch myself. I turned around and Dave Grohl is playing the drums. It’s an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Nobody can replace Jared. But…it’s Dave fucking Grohl. If you’re going to be replaced by anybody, it might as well be the best.”

Champion is set to return to the tour soon, but Grohl has agreed to join the band again for their Los Angeles Forum show tonight, Tuesday October 13.
