Mel B is celebrating after giving birth to a baby girl.

The singer was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles yesterday after going into labour. Mel and her husband Stephen Belafonte are thrilled to announce that their baby arrived last night.

"This evening Melanie Brown and husband Stephen Belafonte welcomed their new baby girl in Los Angeles,” the couple said in a statement. "This is the first child for Mel and Stephen and both mum and baby are happy, healthy and doing well."

Mel already has two daughters – 12-year-old Phoenix Chi and Angel, four – from previous relationships. The 36-year-old star has also taken to her Twitter account to reveal her joy at the new arrival.

“Finally our baby arrives,Stephen nearly passed out,Phoenix screamed,I laughed so hard the baby popped out!!! She is just sooo amazing!! (sic)” Mel wrote.

No other details about the baby’s name or weight have yet been released.

Earlier this week Mel admitted she was doing everything she could to speed up her labour. She had been advised that she would have to be induced if she didn’t go into labour naturally.

"I just had my doctor on the phone and he's given me some ultimatums which are good. It's coming out this week, one way or another,” she explained. "Ideally I want it to come naturally, but I've tried everything. I've tried the hot food, the running, the sex and violence.

"I've tried it all. And it just seems to be stuck and hibernating in there getting bigger and bigger, so it's coming out this week for sure."

Mel’s Spice Girls bandmate Emma Bunton has expressed her delight at the new arrival.

“@OfficialMelB Yeah!!! Well done Mummy! Lots of love. Xxx (sic), Emma wrote on her Twitter page.
