Demi Lovato is "devastated" after her friend died following a battle with drug addiction.

The 27-year-old has always spoken openly about her personal battles with cocaine and Oxycontin addiction, and suffered a near-fatal drug overdose last summer.

On Wednesday, she took to her Instagram Stories to share she lost her friend Thomas following a similar struggle, writing under a black and white snap of her pal: "Devastated. Please hold your loved ones tight. Tell them they are special and that you love them. Make sure they know it. RIP to my boo @sirtruss."

In a second post, Demi urged her fans to help anyone they know who is struggling with addiction, adding: "Addiction is NO joke.. heaven gained this beautiful angel last night because of that terrible disease.

"I’m crushed and will always miss you @sirtruss. If you or someone you know is struggling please know it’s okay to ask for help."

The Skyscraper hitmaker recently celebrated a year of sobriety, and opened up in a statement on social media last year about the effect fans' support had on her recovery.

"I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction. What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time," she penned. "The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side. I will keep fighting."
