Awkwafina regrets trying to change her personality in an attempt to impress a man.

The rapper/actress, real name Nora Lum, is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the film business having landed parts in features such as Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians.

However, Awkwafina has now shared that she was a little insecure about her need to be in a relationship when she was younger and recalled how she once tried to date a guy who was clearly not right for her.

“For me, the pressure was on to prove to myself that I could have a boyfriend,” she said in a video interview with U.S. Vogue. “Physically, he’s my type. 100 pounds, five foot two. He just had the body of a graphic designer.”

However, it quickly became apparent that they were not a match. Awkwafina found her date’s “hyper-intellectualism” to be very boring, and she was more than a little disturbed when he insisted on ordering food for her during a dinner.

“The waitress comes and I’m about to order, and he was like, ‘We’ll take the steak.’ One steak for both of us. And then he says, ‘I want it well done.’ And I was like, ‘How dare you.’ Who eats a well-done steak? That’s like eating a bed, you know what I mean?” the star explained. “The steak comes, and he proceeds to cut up the steak into little, baby pieces. Like one would do for a bird, a small bird. I guess that was the first red flag.”

Awkwafina then explained that the final straw was when he wouldn’t watch the movie White Chicks with her – making her realise she was acting like a totally different person around him.

“So then there became two me’s. There became like the real me and this other weird me that pretended to have read Infinite Jest. It wasn’t me. And I remember thinking maybe I would have to negotiate these identities, which me would come out, because my friends definitely know that I’m not into brutalist architecture,” she sighed, noting that they never saw each other after their last date.
