Katy Perry's latest music reflects her new-found maturity.

The 32-year-old singer is currently gearing up for the release of her record Brave, which marks her fifth studio album.

Speaking about the themes of Brave, Katy has shared that her latest offering embraces a new phase in her life and a fresh outlook.

"I left my 20s, and I've gone to my 30s," she told Entertainment Weekly. "I've embraced. I've surrendered. I've healed some of my issues with my family, with my relationships. Today I'm sober, but I don't know about tomorrow! One day at a time, right?

"It's all kind of beautiful. I built up Katy Perry and she was so fun. And I still am Katy Perry, and I love her so much but at the core, I'm Katheryn Hudson (her birth name), and I think that's being revealed as I embrace who I really am."

Brave is the follow-up to Katy's 2013 album Prism, and is set to feature a different sound to her previous releases, with a mix of fun and "dance-y" tunes.

She started writing songs for the record in June last year (16), after making the decision to temporarily relocate to her home in Santa Barbara. And being at the quiet property meant Katy had more inspiration when it came to writing new songs.

"The energy is just totally different - it's not thirsty or desperate or clingy," she mused. "It's a really beautiful kind of Zen-like feeling place. I just went there to gather myself and I started making a record in June of last year."

Katy also revealed some of the track names on the record, including Bigger Than Me, which she penned after the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The Chained to the Rhythm star was a devout supporter of Hillary Clinton, and was devastated when Donald Trump emerged victorious.

Other tracks on Brave include a dance song called Swish Swish, as well as previously released singles Chained to the Rhythm and Bon Appetit.
