British singer George Shelley's younger sister has died after being hit by a car.

Harriet Shelley, 21, suffered serious head injuries in an accident on 28 April (17), and was receiving treatment in an intensive care unit at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, England.

The Shelley family confirmed the tragic news on Saturday night (06May17), with Harriet's mother Toni Harris telling The Sun that her daughter had been in the "wrong place at the wrong time".

Last Tuesday (02May17), Toni spoke about Harriet's situation and praised hospital staff for their work in caring for her daughter.

"She's very poorly but she's stable," Toni told The Sun. "Everybody at Southmead Hospital has been amazing, they have been working 24/7 to make sure she is alright.

"I would like to thank everyone in Clevedon for praying for our daughter... They have been holding church services, Bristol's Buddhist Centre has also been helping - everybody across different religions have been so amazing."

Harriet had recently updated her Twitter account to tell her fans she had left her dissertation to the last minute for her midwifery degree.

Former Union J singer George is yet to comment, but it seems from his Instagram account that he was just back from a holiday in Costa Rica when the accident happened.

The 23-year-old had been keeping fans updated with photos from his break, which he was enjoying with his rumoured boyfriend Matthew Holehouse. He last posted on social media on 28 April, the same day his sister was hit by a car.
