Carlos Santana has claimed that a quote that appeared to be critical of Beyonce’s singing was taken out of context by the media.

According to the AAP and the New Zealand Herald, Santana was addressing the Sunday night Grammy Awards and the reason why Adele beat Beyonce for Album, Single and Song of the Year. “I think that Adele won because she can sing, sing. With all respect to our sister Beyonce, Beyonce is very beautiful to look at and it’s more like modelling kind of music – music to model a dress – she’s not a singer, singer, with all respect to her.”

He went on, “Adele can sing, sing. She doesn’t bring all the dancers and props, she can just stand there and she just stood there and sang the song and that’s it, and this is why she wins.”

Obviously, there is a huge social media contingent that includes millions of fans of Beyonce and they were not happy with the statement but there were also a number of comments in support including “Carlos Santana” happens to be right. The difference between Beyonce and Adele is the same as Beiber and Roy Orbison.”, “#CarlosSantana is right. Adele is a better SINGER than Beyonce. Beyonce is a better entertainer. And Adele sold 9M more albums than B.” and “Carlos Santana is right: Beyonce isn’t much of a singer, but a great performer; Adele is a great singer, but not much of a performer.”

Then there was someone named Blue Ivy’s Purse, who may have the guitarist mixed up with Jimmy Buffett:

Carlos did release a statement late Tuesday (February 14) afternoon, saying that his statement on Beyonce was taken out of context.

I would like to clarify a comment that was reported when I was doing an interview for some upcoming shows in Australia & New Zealand. My intent was to congratulate Adele on her amazing night at the Grammies. My comment about Beyonce was regretfully taken out of context. I have the utmost respect for her as an artist and a person. She deserves all the accolades that come her way. I wish Beyonce and her family all the best.
