Debbie Harry was interviewed by Gordon Smart on the brand new Radio X Evening Show last night, where she spoke about Blondie breaking into Stonehenge after playing Glastonbury, David Bowie being instrumental in launching Blondie’s career and her Scottish roots.

Debbie Harry on Blondie breaking into Stonehenge
GS: Debbie, a really good pal of mine worked with you in 1999 and he tells a wonderful story about when you went down to play Glastonbury, and on the way back Blondie as a band gatecrashed Stonehenge, climbed over the fences and probably broke quite a lot of laws… Do you remember that, and what was your take on that day?
DH: Well, I remember different aspects of it and climbing over the fences wasn’t… I don’t think that I was one of the fence climbers, you know. But I think, you know, the boys had to touch, you know they wanted to really touch that big stone and I envy them that… but we were allowed to go up the path and I remember feeling some kind of - I know I’ll probably be debunked about this - but I remember getting closer to the ring and feeling, like, this sort of magnetic force, you know like this sort of electrical feeling that came. Clearly I walked through this field of energy when I got up closer to it. So I’ll never forget that, that was quite something.
Debbie Harry pays tribute to David Bowie
DH: I think Bowie was instrumental in launching our career as a real touring live entity and he was extremely generous to us. He opened… I think he opened a lot of doors for us by, you know, putting us on that tour with Iggy. And that was the first step in the right direction. A big step. So he was totally responsible for that.
On her Scottish roots
GS: You must be Scottish somewhere down the line if you like miserable weather that much!
DH: Oh yes, I’m totally Scottish. I’m a Mackenzie.
GS: No way, really?
DH: Uhuh, yep.
GS: I didn’t know that. Was that your mother’s side or your father’s side?
DH: Ah, god, that I couldn’t really say but I have a feeling it was my mother’s.
GS: Do you realise for the rest of my life I’m going to tell everybody that Debbie Harry’s Scottish?
DH: I’ve been saying it for years, so, maybe, you know, maybe some people don’t wanna hear that but then again some others do!
