John Legend is hoping the calm after the U.S. election will put America back on track after months of racial drama that culminated with the hatred that spilled out after Beyonce's performance with the Dixie Chicks at the CMA Awards.
The All of Me singer tells news show Extra his homeland has been divided for too long, and he was sickened by the negative response received by Beyonce following her performance with the country trio last week (02Nov16).
"I was disappointed by some of the reaction that I saw, but this is a very divided time in America right now and hopefully we’ll be stronger together, we'll elect the right person to lead the country on Tuesday and hopefully start to heal some of these divisions that have been highlighted through the election," he said.
"I think a lot of people have been reacting negatively to Black Lives Matter and artists like Beyonce and myself and others who have been on the side of Black Lives Matter and speaking out against injustice. I think some people had some backlash to that and that’s unfortunate but we have to deal with it and hopefully we’ll learn from it and as a country, heal from it together and unite to make this country better."
Legend has made it clear his vote was reserved for Democrat Hillary Clinton on Tuesday (08Nov16), when Americans went to the polls to elect a new leader, who will replace Barack Obama in the new year (17).
Early polling results suggest the former First Lady and her Republican rival Donald Trump are in a tight race to become the nation's 45th president.
She prepared for election day with two star-studded rallies in Pennsylvania and North Carolina on Monday night (07Nov16), which featured the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga.
