Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga were among the early winners at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday (06Nov16).

During MTV's pre-show celebrations ahead of the ceremony in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the Sorry singer was named the victor in the Biggest Fans category, while Gaga was awarded the Best Look gong.

In a video message Gaga thanked her fans for their votes, explained she was promoting her new album Joanne in the U.S. and that she had recently toned down her style to complement the record's focus on her family life.

The trophies given out to winners at this year's (16) ceremony are purple in colour in honour of soul icon Prince, who died aged 57 in April (16).

Bruno Mars opened the prizegiving with a performance of his new track 24K Magic, followed by a brief but explosive set by Joe Jonas' band DNCE, who played a medley of their songs Body Moves and Cake By The Ocean.

Host and singer Bebe Rexha then took to the stage with Dutch electronica superstar Martin Garrix, to perform their track In The Name of Love before the prizegiving commenced.

Martin had to shuffle back on to the stage after his performance, as he won the first award given out during the ceremony itself, beating Afrojack, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, and Major Lazer to the Best Electronic prize.

During his acceptance speech the DJ thanked fans in the Ahoy Rotterdam convention centre saying, "Rotterdam thank you guys so much for the award it means so much to me. I'm still shaking because I just got off stage to perform with Bebe."

Another early winner was Nigerian hip hop sensation, Wizkid, real name Ayo Balogun, who was named as Best African Act.

Other acts set to hit the EMAs stage include The Weeknd, Green Day, Kings of Leon, OneRepublic, Shawn Mendes, and Lukas Graham.
