Rapper Nicki Minaj had fans fooled on Saturday (08Oct16) after joking about the surprise release of her new album.

The Super Bass hitmaker has been working on the follow up to 2014's The Pinkprint, but has yet to share any details about its release, so she caught her Twitter followers off-guard over the weekend as she claimed her new project would hit the Internet overnight.

"Ok u know what I wasn't gonna say anything but damn ya got it out of me (sic)," she wrote. "The album drops at midnight. it's called #PickMyFruitOut."

Nicki, whose fans had been begging her to release some new material in the hours leading up to her post, then continued to tease fans by sharing the tracklist, which featured a string of fruit-themed titles, including Bananas and Fruit Loops.

She added, "The one I'm most excited about, however, is track #10. It's called N**ga toss my fruit salad and it features my favorite rapper of all time".

As fans realised they had been pranked, they got in on the joke too, making quips about her fruit-themed tracks and even helping her fake album title become a trending topic on the microblogging site.

"Love you sooooooo fkn (f**king) much," she exclaimed. "I been cryin laughin this whole time, btw (by the way)... Good stuff (sic)."

Nicki's cheeky tweets came hours after an old demo she had recorded, titled Make A Baby, leaked online.

As she addressed the leak, the hip-hop superstar, who is dating rapper Meek Mill, revealed she had originally written the tune for Ciara, but at the time, she was too shy to send the track to the R&B singer.

She explained, "I wrote #MakeABaby about 7 years ago in Atlanta. Didn't even know it was leaked... One day I met her in ATL (Atlanta) & told her I wrote a song for her. She was interested to hear it. I was too scared to send it. Smh (shaking my head). Life..."
