Actor Armie Hammer hated his name when he was growing up.
The 30-year-old actor's moniker is one of the most unusual in Hollywood and while he has grown into it now, Armie admits he struggled with the name when he was a child.
"Conceptually, I get it (why it sounds amazing)," he said during an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night (05Oct16). "But if you’re in a loud room and asks what your name is and you go, ‘Armie Hammer’, they go, ‘What? Harvey Mammer?’ There are so many consonants."
When host Stephen said that Harvey Mammer sounds like the name of an adult movie star, Armie replied: "Like Armie Hammer doesn’t? I mean, come on, it’s lose lose!
"It’s just a really hard name to be when you’re like five. Especially as it’s short for Armand, which is a big name for a little kid. It’s literally the worst!"
Armie has starred in films including The Social Network, The Lone Ranger and the upcoming critically-acclaimed drama The Birth of a Nation. As well as varying his career choices, Armie also keeps himself busy in his personal life, and loves taking part in high-octane activities during his time off, but his love of danger has led his wife Elizabeth Chambers to think her spouse may have a medical issue.
"My wife was convinced for the longest time that I had what she called a 'frontal lobe issue'" he laughed. "She says that’s where you assess risk and danger and all that, and she says mine is just severely underdeveloped, because I (do whatever)."
Asked for an example, Armie then launched into a story about how he took his life into his own hands when he brought a spicy sausage from a street vendor in New York.
"(I was) just walking around on the street and I was like, ‘I will take a spicy sausage from this cart please,'" Armie recalled. "And the guy goes ‘Spicy sausage? Here’ and he was holding one in his hand. It was just sitting there, in a bun, ready. And I go, ‘Oh no, no, do you have one that you can put on a grill or like a fresh one?’ And he goes, ‘Sorry man, my grill’s off’. And I go, ‘Hmm, OK I’ll take that one’. And I was holding it in my hand thinking, ‘This is going to hurt, this is not a smart move'.
"Then I ate the entire thing and I was up all night last night violently ill. But this is where the frontal lobe issue comes in. I will not let a hot dog bring me down. I will not be beaten by a hot dog. I will get another spicy sausage today!"
