Nick Jonas is convinced he writes music differently since he's had sex.

The 24-year-old wrote music for his debut solo album Nicholas Jonas when he was only around 11 years old and his songwriting has matured throughout his career, both solo and with The Jonas Brothers. And he credits losing his virginity for his different approach.

“Sexuality is important, as an artist, to embrace and use it as ammunition in your creative life, and understanding that part of your life and how it makes you feel," he told Wonderland magazine.

"Anytime I approach writing a song I think about that fact that since I started having sex, my creative life changed dramatically and my ability to write a song with more genuine depth, more reality."

Nick and his brothers Joe and Kevin famously wore purity rings when they first started out, but Nick confirmed in 2014 he had stopped wearing it because he lost his virginity.

He split from beauty queen Olivia Culpo last year (15) after almost two years of dating and he channelled that heartbreak into his most recent album, Last Year Was Complicated, which was released in June (16). He hopes that writing songs more personal to him will help him connect to listeners.

“I am way more connected to my music when it comes from a personal place, and so I wanted to find a way to present those stories and lay them out. I really want to see this music resonate with people," he said. "The great skill with an artist is to make this music and see it come alive live, too."

Since the split, Nick has been linked to actresses Lily Collins and Kate Hudson, but he has insisted he's still single.
