Miley Cyrus was made to star in Woody Allen's new comedy drama series Crisis in Six Scenes because the director wrote the role with her in mind.
The veteran actor/filmmaker cast the 23-year-old as a young hippy in his new show for streaming service Amazon, in which they co-star alongside Elaine May, and Miley admits she didn't have to do much research for her onscreen portrayal as her character shares many of the same traits she has in real life.
And while the limited series is set in the 1960s, the singer/actress claims the storyline isn't too different from the issues facing today's generation of political activists.
"It's very parallel to what life is right now," she explained on U.S. breakfast show Today. "I'm a female revolutionary character in the Sixties, but I feel like people, when they work with Woody, I think they wanna hear you had to dig deep into this character and I didn't because it was kind of written for me. I mean, he said that he kinda had me in mind when he was writing this, because it's the same kind of politics that we're dealing with now.
"It was very strange to be watching current news and also reflecting so much on the past at the same time, because there's so many rallies and things going on in America at the time I was filming, so it was really incredible."
Meanwhile, Woody recently confessed he had become enamoured with Miley's talents after watching her star in former Disney show Hannah Montana.
"I noticed years ago that my kids would be watching Hannah Montana," he told The Hollywood Reporter in May (16), "and I would say, 'Who is that girl? She's got such a good delivery. You know, she snaps those lines off so well'. The show is a silly little show, but she's very good at what she does."
Crisis in Six Scenes premieres on Amazon Prime on 30 September (16).
