On 20th March 2019, Scala will celebrate 20 years of hosting live music in its iconic London venue. To mark this very special occasion Scala will be turning back the clocks on entry fee and bar prices for one night only to give Londoners the chance to party like its 1999. British indie rock’s ones to watch The Orielles will be providing the soundtrack to the evening, supported by South London multi-instrumentalist wunderkind Mellah and rock’n’roll newcomers Crewel Intentions. With pints clocking in at £3 for the first time since the millennium, this will be the birthday party to end all birthday parties.

One night of celebrations simply isn’t enough for such a milestone moment. The night before its big birthday on 19 March, Scala will host veteran electronic duo Simian Mobile Disco and all-female singing choir Deep Throat Choir to perform their critically-acclaimed and adventurous collaborative album Murmurations in full. Mafalda and Charlotte Adigéry will also support.

Scala will also be welcoming the return of Popstarz on Friday 23 March for the first time since it’s “last ever party” in 2014. A London institution in itself, the legendary LGBTQ+ club night led London’s queer scene for two decades. At a time when London’s nightlife - and queer spaces in particular - are under threat, Popstarz is back to provide a safe space once more.

Completing the birthday celebrations on Saturday 24 March is a very special Garage Nation night, featuring 20 DJs and 20 MCs on hand to toast the last 20 years of garage music. Splitting the genre across all three floors, including House Nation on the top floor and Old Skool Nation in the bar lounge, this will be the ultimate garage celebration and perfect closing party for Scala’s birthday week.

Originally a cinema built in the 1920s, the Scala has cemented itself as an essential hub for clubbing and live music in the city since 1999. As it prepares to enter its third decade, Scala continues to champion new music and the best of British talent in a city whose nightlife is under threat.

On the historic moment, Jane Cotter, Events Coordinator, Scala says:

“London is an ever-changing city but we’re so proud to have consistently delivered new, exciting music and events to people for 20 years. When it came to celebrating this landmark, we thought it would be only fitting to put the event on sale with a 20-year-old ticket price and 20-year-old bar prices.”

Tom Baker, Founder, Eat Your Own Ears, added:

“I travelled down from Leicester where I was at university to the Scala in the late 90s to see the brilliant Japanese musician Cornelius, the show was absolutely mesmerising and the venue with its iconic red stairs, balcony’s and grand marble floored bar area made such an impression, I just wanted to move to London, work in the “music industry- whatever that meant!” and put shows on at the Scala. So fast forward 18 years or so, it’s an absolute honour to be involved in celebrating a very special, independent and unique venue, and one that means so much to me and I’m sure so much to so many people that have seen so many incredible shows there, here’s to another amazing 20 years. Congratulations.”

Scala’s 20th birthday celebrations will run between 19 - 23 March 2019. For more information and tickets please visit dice.fm/venue/scala.
