NYC-based BAILEN -- the trio comprising fraternal twins Daniel (vocals/bass/synth/guitar), David (vocals/drums), and their younger sister Julia Bailen (vocals/guitar) -- will release their debut album Thrilled To Be Here, produced by GRAMMY-Award winner John Congleton (St. Vincent, The War on Drugs), on 26th April, 2019 via Fantasy Records.
BAILEN’s beguiling three-part harmonies, striking arrangements and evocative songwriting fuel the album’s first single I Was Wrong, a statement of compassion and self-reflection. As the band explains: “The song is about coming together and listening to the other side of an argument, hearing another perspective, and being able to say I was wrong. It was inspired by the growing global divide in ideology and a general unwillingness to hear out someone with differing opinions. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is admit your faults, but often it’s the only way to move forward.”
BAILEN’s otherworldly musicality springs from a very deep well. In fact, it’s in their DNA. Raised in New York by their classically trained musician parents, Daniel, David and Julia immersed themselves in the family’s diverse record collection. The group’s highly collaborative songs are formed by three very different individuals who were all inspired by literature and a love of language. The resulting confident, meticulous songcraft of Thrilled To Be Here is rooted in the young group’s preternatural dexterity, insight and lyrical bite.
Detail-oriented and precise, the members of BAILEN found the perfect counterpoint in producer Congleton’s more open approach: “We think micro, and John was really good at thinking macro for the record,” Julia observes. “First records are special because you’ve spent your whole life writing them. Recording our album in a month at the same studio with one producer meant that we kept the creativity, but also found the cohesiveness.”
BAILEN has already begun cultivating a passionate live following through, guesstimating over 300 shows to date, and touring and collaborating with such artists as Amos Lee, The Lone Bellow, Joseph, Oh Wonder, and others. The band has just announced a U.S. headline tour in February and March, with UK and European dates to be announced soon. Last week BAILEN celebrated the announcement of Thrilled To Be Here with a packed hometown show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom.
