DOUG SEEGERS
A STORY I GOT TO TELL

New album released on BMG on May 31st 2019

”When I first heard Doug Seegers’ voice, so full of soul and raw emotion, I was stunned. This man has lived these songs, not in his imagination but every long day over many hard years. He stands before you now – ready to testify. Listen and believe.”
Emmylou Harris

A Story To Tell is Doug Seegers’ first major album release on BMG in the UK. American by birth and a big star in Sweden, he has gold and platinum discs to his name, over 300 live shows to his credit and several successful album releases elsewhere.

Out on BMG on May 31st A Story I Got To Tell features 11 tracks in all and is produced by the renowned US producer Joe Henry. The music encompasses country and blues, gospel, soul and rock…it’s a fluid and eloquent mix that shows just what an accomplished artist Doug Seegers is. But, as the title suggests, it has not all been plain sailing...

More Hobo than hitmaker, more down and out than down with the kids, there was a time when Doug Seegers’ life was not looking good. In fact it was looking very very bad.

Down in the gutter and looking up at the stars (as opposed to mingling with them) Doug’s life had become a sorry tale of drink, drugs and been there, done that, bought the T shirt. In fact Doug had a veritable shed load of T shirts. Which is why, in 2013 at the age of 62 and a reformed character, he was out on the Nashville streets trying to earn an honest musical dime. Then something rather marvellous occurred.

A Swedish film crew stopped by the food bank where he hung out. They were making a documentary headed up by Jill Johnson, a big Swedish country star. They saw, they listened, they liked. And Jill liked so much that an invite was issued to Sweden.

The song that Doug sang to Jill that first afternoon he went on to sing on her Swedish TV show. It became a hit overnight and the title of his first big album, Going Down To The River. The second half of Doug’s life had begun.

Since then there have been multiple live shows, No 1 records, several albums and an ever-growing fan base. His new album, A Story I Got To Tell, is his first big launch in the UK.

A Story To Tell covers a broad musical sweep and an engaging personal narrative. Its track listing is as follows: White Line; Give It Away; Demon Seed; Six Feet Under; Angel From A Broken Home; Out On The Street; My Little Falling Star; Poor Side Of Town; Rockabilly Bug; Can’t Keep Running (Back To You); Life Is A Mystery.

The album is largely originals but includes two cover songs, White Line and Poor Side of Town. White Line is written by Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett and echoes Doug’s own experience on the street - it could have been written for him.

Give It Away is the song at the heart of the album evoking Doug’s spiritual journey from rock bottom addict to recovery and redemption. The song, the second single from the album, tells Doug’s tale of paying it forward and discovering his life’s mission which comes, as for many, via an AA meeting.

In Six Feet Under Doug takes listeners back to a darker time when, after a successful Christmas 2016 tour in Sweden, he ventured back to Nashville. There he faces the stark reality of being truly alone, friendless except for his (former) drug dealer. Rockabilly Bug is a genuine foot stomper and Life Is a Mystery beautifully closes the album,

Demon Seed, one of the standout tracks, is the first single from the album and was released on digital platforms on 8th March. It conjures up the great sweeping vistas of the American Western (think Rio Bravo meets Kill Bill), tumbleweed and old Buicks. It even has a Spanish flavoured break while its insistent beat speaks of love and longing, loss and redemption. A fine track from a very fine UK debut.

Demon Seed (and A Story I Got To Tell) had its first official, televised public hearing on March 1st when Doug performed it on the German TV show Berlin Live alongside Keifer Sutherland. Live UK dates are in the pipeline for Autumn.
