Fast becoming the composer that every film and tv producer in the land wants to score their next project, BAFTA winner Paul Leonard Morgan further enhances his reputation as one of the UK's hottest musical talents with this album release.
Still in his twenties PLM has provided the soundtrack to numerous movies, TV dramas and advertising campaigns. For his first long player he gives extra depth to his music by collaborating with Isobel Campbell, Beta Band's Steve Mason and Belle and Sebastian's Richard Colburn.
This collection of lush soundscapes laced with a bold contemporary edge takes you to the wide open plains of a far off land. And, perhaps, that is where the composer is trying to go as you sense this album, a showreel of work to date will fall onto the lap of a major Hollywood producer and the prize of big movie score will be his.
There are a number of tracks that do have a 'heard this before' feel to them. They may have already reached your sub-concious as the backdrop to a trailer for ITV drama or used as a theme for a BBC sporting event. But also, there are tracks that show Paul's influences which are drawn from classic movie soundtracks and down-tempo genres. 'Sienna' for instance takes all it's insparation from Thomas Newman's 'American Beauty', while opening track 'Wilderness' would fit perfectly on a Portishead long player.
The album is called 'Filmtales' and there are tracks that would suit most on screen situations from car chases through the streets of Paris to the nervous anticipation of a first kiss. But with PLM's clever use of modern production, beats and samples the album stands above your everyday orchestral soundtrack.
This is an excellent release from a man who, if he continues to produce and compose to this level will no doubt pick up an oscar one day, providing he gets that call!
