It's not often that My Space offers up something that I'm actually so taken with that I want to review it, but for once the otherwise time-wasting abyss of cyberspace has delivered something worthwhile.
The rain drenched album artwork says it all – Nic Garcia's music is awash with Sunday afternoon wistfulness and contemplation. Vaguely reminiscent of a slightly more hard-edged and depressive Sufjan Stevens, the 13 songs, driven by Garcia's brushed guitar, the odd synth and throaty vocals will leave you with a feeling of post sleep gentleness that is well worth experiencing.
Evocative of empty skies and long car journeys, Garcia takes you somewhere very special. The 'why' and 'how' of it is almost inexplicable – could it me the tremolo of his guitar, the whisper of his voice, the strange ambience of the record, the vacancy of his lyrics that transports you? I don't know, but what ever he does, he does it and he does it well. I challenge you to listen to 'Crosses' and not have someone physically shake you afterwards in order to bring you back.
