Just before the end of his set here, there is a moment when Tom Figgins' slowly emerging status is underlined. Setting up for the penultimate song, Figgins quietly thanks his band and then announces his name, before realising some of the small crowd have no idea who he is. With a shy smile and an apology for not saying it earlier, he continues with the powerful and moving song Mother.

It's a song that showcases his great voice and penchant for the emotive and heartfelt. However in the cosy surroundings of the Notting Hill Arts Club it's quite a battle between Figgins' earnest performance and the chattering classes at the bar. It's at times like this when one of the greatest jobs in the world must be bloody hard work.

Figgins is playing with his full band after several solo shows around London and despite the small venue they make a big noise. After a year that's seen impressive singles Let Your Roots Grow and the more recent Rain On Me, it seems unlikely that the gigs will stay this low key, and he will soon not have to worry about telling an audience who he is.
