The Brits Critics Choice winner Sam Smith took to the Roundhouse in Camden on Friday night following the release of his incredible album 'In The Lonely Hour'.
The 22-year-old singer has built up huge support from those in the industry as well as a strong fanbase in the short period of time since we first heard him on Disclosure's 'Latch' and Naughty Boy's 'La, La, La'. With 'In The Lonely Hour' going straight to the top of the charts - making it the fastest selling debut album of the year so far - Smith is on a roll.
The sold-out Roundhouse show, brimming with excited fans, was kicked off by Smith's performance of 'Nirvana' from the 2013 Nirvana EP. As his stunning voice filled the space, it was clear we were all in the presence of one of the greatest artists of our time.
At one point, songstress Jessie Ware joined Smith on stage to perform 'Leave Your Lover' from the new album. As two of the most promising artists in the UK at the moment, it was a treat to see both their talents combine. Smith has stated that the album itself is based on his own experience with love, "It's about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn't love me back. I think I'm over it now, but I was in a very dark place." The emotion and feeling was certainly felt by all in attendance especially when his new number one single was performed.
'Stay With Me' is a beautiful ballad that landed the singer back at the top of the charts last weekend and on Friday night his performance of it was aired to millions - not just those at the Roundhouse. The performance was part of a Google Play advertising campaign for its music and streaming service. Leaving the stage briefly, Smith urged everyone not to leave until he returned ready for the highly-anticipated performance; as if any of us would go anywhere! It was a pleasure to be able to watch such a fantastic moment in his career.
Sam Smith is one of those timeless artists - his range will blow your mind, his voice is mesmerising and talent just oozes out of him. The critical acclaim he's received has certainly proven to be well-deserved!
