Jointpop release their new double A-side single 'Please Don’t Tell My In-laws (I’m an Outlaw)/Monday Morning Love Situation’, taken from the critically acclaimed album 'The January Transfer Window’ on 18th May. Formed in 1996 in Trinidad and Tobago, Jointpop have travelled the world fusing together their unique styles and various musical influences. Music-News reporter Susan Ford caught up with leadsinger Gary Hector in the midst of the build up to the new single.
Who are Jointpop and what's your story? Gary Hector..Vocal/Git Damon Homer..Git Dion Camacho...Drums Phil Hill...Keyboards Jerome Girdharrie...Bass The jointpop story is one of a rock n roll band on a calypso and reggae island. About trying to find a voice in your own home. Just about being travellers and rock n roll troubadours.
Where does the name 'Jointpop' come from?
Just ' popped' into my 'head'...[laughs] Please describe your music to those who have never heard it,
A bit of most rock n roll styles,British invasion, mid 70’s British Punk, classic rock, indie, and of course with Jointpop being from Trinidad and Tobago, some of the island imagery and sound included What do you aim to achieve through your music?
Just to keep Jointpop together as long as possible, have good fun with the band, be honest with our music and travel the world. Where does your unique sound come from?
Being a good smart thief really [laughs] but its about having a very healthy respect for rock n roll How much does place, i.e. where you come from and where you write your music affect the outcome of your music?
In Trinidad and Tobago where we come from, we are free of all music biz trappings. So we are free to write as we please, any topic and style, versus if we were from London for example. We may get caught up in all the 'Brit' scene, the Camden fashion and 'most' of the bands sounding the same etc. How do you go about penning lyrics and writing music?
Just the process of being patient most of the times, just the vibe and topic coming to me versus looking for it sometimes. Mostly I go back the following day and check what it was I wrote the night before [laughs]. What is your favourite Jointpop song and how did it earn this title? Well the new single ' Please don’t tell my In-laws (I’m an Outlaw) is based on a UK airport Immigration incident/misunderstanding. What, as a fan, is the best live gig you've ever been too?
A few really. The Stones and AC DC in Toronto, The Follow in Camden, Dr Dog in London, Metric in Toronto, Joan Jett in Stockholm and Trinidad, Sonic Youth in Toronto, plus a few more. [Very respectable choice guys – Susan] What can fans expect from a Jointpop live show and where can people catch you live?
A very honest, energetic live show, good songs and good vibes. Of course our gigs are in Trinidad and Tobago and when we tour the UK. What is in the future from Jointpop after releasing the single?
Wish I could tell, but another UK tour for 2009, to follow previous UK tours in 2006 and 2008. And just to keep writing and recording our rock n roll stories
