First impression as you walk into Dingwalls is that the place is absolutely heaving. Dub Colossus are already cooking up a storm and the crowd is having a rare old time.
Second impression is that the sound is slightly muddy but that the horns and the percussion and the guitars and the vocals are so tightly meshed that they are a wall of sound that Phil Spector could only dream about.
Dub Colossus drew a completely packed crowd to Dingwalls on Wednesday night and absolutely ripped the air with some passionate Ethiopian reggae, dubbed to the max and full of all the texture and power of the ‘Town Called Addis’ album.
Somehow they managed to shoehorn 11 or twelve on to the stage and the horn section, percussionists and bass completely dominated with the twin vocals giving the focus and visual appeal.
As they do on record the sound is full of jazzy, lazy and drawled licks and they jammed up a storm with the crowd in the ‘Funk Pit’ looking like dervishes and generating enough heat to put the club squarely into downtown Addis Ababa.
Camden Town is used to sights and sounds of the ‘unusual’ persuasion and Dub Colossus definitely fall into the original and rare categories but they are seriously committed and superbly talented and although they were having a great time there was no let up in the standards.
They all of the ‘Town….’ Album and closed on a grand ‘Uptown Top Rankin’ ’ with all the lyrics in Ethiopian – bizarre but great fun.
All around a stunning night of heavy, heavy sounds – now all I need is a night off to get over dancing like a loon for nearly two hours!
