On arriving at 93 feet east in the curry hub that is Brick Lane I had no idea what to expect with regards to the Philbys. Initial listens to their myspace page had proven disappointing. Thankfully when the Philbys did emerge (to a packed house) initial disappointment made way for genuine excitement.

The guys tore through a set of fantastic indie rock. Songs that sounded flat on their myspace came alive on stage. Vocalist Russ oozed charisma as he gave a vocal performance far superior to anything else on show that night.

The Philbys manage what few jangly indie bands can. They show vulnerability without sounding pathetic. It is the finest of lines and many fail but they have judged it well. Songs like 'Freefalling' and 'Razor' prove the band are well on their way to creating something special and I look forward to the album.
