Okay, so I wasn’t so enamoured with the album, but perhaps I was wrong... I think I said something about Morgan sounding a bit like The Zombies, but not as good. I’ve reached the conclusion, however, that I was at that point clearly not feeling myself, for the guy is simply brilliant. Not just a bit good, but really, really good.
Yes, he sounds a lot like Elliot Smith, but he did used to be in Smith’s band. Yes, he takes a hell of a long time to make a record, but does it honestly matter. In the time it takes him to roll out seven songs I’m converted. Andrew Morgan – you are great and I am sorry for ever doubting it.
The music is lovely, straight ahead indie pop jangle. It’s ephemeral, but beautiful in that Brian Wilson-esque way - each song a master class in baroque song craft, delivered through the haze of Morgan’s part whispered, part sung vocals, lush arrangements, and delicate lyrical drift.
Perhaps it’s the time of year... yep, that’s it. This must be Autumn music.
