Nominations were today announced for the 20th MOBO Awards and it’s clear that the focus is firmly set on the UK’s thriving Hip Hop and Grime scenes.

For the first time Grime and Hip Hop acts are dominating the MOBO nominations list and have scooped a whopping 27 nominations across all MOBO categories including Best Album, Best Song in association with First Direct, Best Male Act, Best Video and Newcomer in association with Virgin Trains East Coast!

Leading the way are hip hop titans Krept & Konan who have grabbed four nominations including Best Album for the duo’s first full-length album The Long Way Home. It made history by becoming the highest charting UK hip hop record when it debuted at #2 in national chart. The South Londoners who are also nominated for Best Male, Best Hip Hop and Best Song are set to alight the 2015 MOBO stage with a special performance.

The MOBO Awards were the first to recognise grime music in any televised award show by introducing the category back in 2010. Previous winners have included Wiley, Kano, Chipmunk and Dizzee Rascal. This year grime giants Stormzy, Skepta and JME all receive nods with North Londoner JME also nominated for FOUR awards including Best Album, Best Song, Best Male and Best Grime in association with BBC Radio 1Xtra. London MC Stormzy, who took home the award for Best Grime Act last year, is up for Best Male and Best Video this year.

It’s also a great year for British females. FKA twigs is up for three nominations; Best Female and Best Video with two of her videos – ‘Pendulum’ and ‘Glass and Patron’ – nominated. This will be the young creative’s second year nominated for the Best Video award. The Gloucestershire raised artist is also set to make her MOBO debut choosing the awards to give a rare televised performance.

London born Lianne La Havas is set to challenge Krept and Konan for the Best Album gong for her hit record Blood. The neo-soul artist is also nominated for Best Female and Best R&B/Soul Act. Lianne was previously nominated for these two awards when she debuted in 2013.

To celebrate 20 years of providing a mainstream platform for a generation of emerging artists, ITV2 and the MOBO Movement have joined forces to create a new award developed by ITV Creative in collaboration with Commercial Break. The MOBO ‘Paving The Way’ award in partnership with ITV2, has been established to honour trailblazers achievements and influence across the creative industries.

East Londoner Wiley is today announced as the first recipient of the inaugural MOBO ‘Paving The Way’ award. Wiley will be honoured with a paving stone to immortalise his legacy in a location meaningful to him where he started on his creative journey. Wiley has chosen to place his paving stone at his former secondary school ‘Bow School’ which his father also attend.

This year’s MOBO Awards are taking place on Wednesday 4th November and will be broadcast live on ITV2 and repeated in full on ITV. This will be the second year of the broadcast partnership between MOBO and ITV.

With the support of Leeds City Council and Leeds Business Improvement District, the MOBO Awards will be held in Leeds for the first time in its 20 year history. Thousands of tickets were snapped up just days after the announcement during Leeds West Indian Carnival, that the awards will take place at the state of the art FD Arena which has played host to international stars including Prince, Pharrell Williams, John Legend, Lionel Richie and Paloma Faith.
