Selena Gomez says acting helped her find a new perspective.

The 23-year-old actress became famous at a young age, starting out in Disney Channel show Barney & Friends. Now she's made a name for herself in Hollywood with films including Spring Breakers and Rudderless and is also known for her great singing voice with hits including Good For You.

Selena is glad she found fame so young, as it helped shape her into the woman she is now.

"Acting gave me a new perspective and developed my personality," she smiled to German magazine Jolie.

The star grew up in Texas and admits she's glad she left her home for the bright lights of Hollywood. She even goes as far as to say it "scares" her to think what would have become of her.

“I definitely didn’t appreciate [my upbringing] when I was little. I was frustrated that my parents weren’t together and never saw the light at the end of the tunnel where my mom was working hard to provide a better life for me. I’m terrified of what I would have become if I’d stayed there. I’m sure I’d have two children by now," she previously told the US edition of Glamour magazine.

But luckily Selena made her dreams come true and can now celebrate her success. She also added that she's so involved in charity work because she wants to help everyone who wasn't as fortunate as her.

"It's my duty," she said.
