Elbow frontman and BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Guy Garvey delves into his personal music box to reveal which artist he’s excited about at the moment.

In this episode, Guy raves about the Malian four piece band Songhoy Blues. Hear about their baptism through the amazing Africa Express project, spearheaded by Damon Albarn. Join Guy in Elbow’s studio to hear his thoughts on the band: their history, musical influences and the sound of the blues in northern Mali.

Music and film fans are also treated to an exclusive clip from upcoming feature film, They Will Have To Kill Us First. The film, to be released in autumn 2015, documents the struggle of Mali’s musicians as they fight for their right to sing, as well as Songhoy Blues working with Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s.

Guy is joined by BBC 6 Music’s Cerys Matthews who is also a huge fan of Songhoy Blues. Cerys offers her unique and informed insight into their sound and influences and finds a gem of a live recording from the BBC archive.

The programme also features live performances from Canned Heat in 1968 and Ali Farke Touré in 2004, as well as a live session from earlier this year of Songhoy Blues performing their recent single Nick.
