As he celebrates the release of his highly-anticipated debut solo single ‘Kiss Me Quick’ this week, Nathan Sykes, previously a member of chart topping band The Wanted, covers the new issue of interactive music magazine SOUNDS.

Nathan speaks about what to expect from his forthcoming debut album, pushing himself vocally on his new material, learning from his experiences in the music industry and creating music that has longevity.

With ‘Kiss Me Quick’ being one of the most added records at US radio last week, Nathan is set to perform his first ever US show as a solo artist on July 22nd at Gramercy Theatre in New York City which sold out in a remarkable 10 minutes. Earlier this year, the singer-songwriter completed a sold out run of UK dates, performing his new music in Glasgow, Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester, Brighton and London - at the iconic Bush Hall - to rave reviews.

On finding his sound for his debut album: “It’s been called soulful pop, but I think you can expect quite a varied album within that genre. There’s some really light-hearted, funky and playful moments, and then there’s some more deep, pouring-my-heart-out moments. I think everyone’s going to have a different favourite song off the album. I really tested myself vocally, because I think for the first time I was able to go, ‘Cool, I’m going to try and do this.’ So I’ve ended up with quite an experimentally-vocal album that I’m incredibly proud of.”

On his experiences in the music industry: “I started with the band at the age of 16 and I’ve learnt so much about music – not just as an artist and a performer, but also about the industry itself and how everything works. I think my understanding of everything and the way the music industry clicks together in a unique way is probably the main thing I’ll take from that.”

On aiming for longevity for his music: “I want my music to live longer than I do!”

Nathan’s debut single is out now and the album will be out later this year.
