Fresh from appearing on the 20th anniversary of the legendary TFI Friday and headlining two sold-out shows at London’s iconic Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Years & Years are today sharing the opening track from their debut album Communion - due out through Polydor on the 10th July.
Available as an instant grat. with album pre-orders, ’Foundation’ sees the band adopt more left-field tendencies; stepping away from the pop melodies of singles ‘King’ & ‘Shine’, letting Olly Alexander’s vocal take centre stage whilst lush and sinister synths swirl and build beneath. Accompanying the track is the Fred Rowson-directed video, which sees Alexander as the object of worship at a bizarre, ritualistic “funeral”.
Of the clip, Alexander explains: “we wanted to revisit some earlier themes and imagery from our videos. We expanded on the eerie and hypnotic feel of the song and played with the drama of ritualistic practise, audience and voyeurism. Our director, Fred Rowson, was really good at seeing into our minds and bringing our ideas to life.”
