Nathan Sykes realised he was too young to quit music when The Wanted went on hiatus.

The British singer was one fifth of the popular boyband, but they announced in January 2014 that they'd be taking a break from music.

However there seem to be no plans to reform any time soon, and 22-year-old Nathan is happy to be forging ahead with a solo career.

"It took a minute to get used to the thought of not being a band anymore, and when we finished the tour and announced we were taking a break, I got home and was thinking, 'OK, this is weird.' But then I realised I was too young to stop doing what I love and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I wasn't going to crawl into a hole somewhere," Nathan told Teen Vogue.

The Wanted, also made up of Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness and Tom Parker, last shared the stage in December.

However Nathan is getting more and more used to being by himself while performing, and thinks he's finally got his solo sound nailed.

"I started off quite R&B, but realised what I was writing was great for other people - not me. After writing this commercial pop/R&B thing - the song was awful - we just sat there and jammed for a bit," he recalled.

"And it came out of nowhere that this is what I wanted to do and how I was going to make happen. I ran home with the new music like I had Willy Wonka's Golden Ticket or something. I was literally Charlie Bucket. The more I found my sound, the less I was worried about being on my own."

Nathan performed his new track Kiss Me Quick at the Capital FM Summertime Ball on Saturday. He shared the bill with a host of other A-list names, including his ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande.
