Demi Lovatos boyfriend made her "fight for it" during her struggles.

The 22-year-old star has been open about her past problems, checking into rehab in 2010 for physical and emotional issues. She later revealed she battled with alcohol and cocaine, but has now been sober for just over three years and is getting stronger every day.

Her boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama has stuck by Demi the whole time, and the singer is forever grateful for the 35-year-old's support.

"There were some moments when it was off and on when I was struggling with my issues," she opened up to Sydney's Kyle And Jackie O show on KIIS 106.5 FM.

"What he would do is he wouldn’t enable me, so he’d say: 'I can’t be around if you’re not going to get your stuff together.'
"It made me fight for it. He’s a very, very good guy."

Demi is enjoying a life free of substances and has been looking noticeably trimmer recently, especially while performing on stage.

If anything, she thinks she's "crazier" now without substances affecting her personality, as her fight with abusing alcohol and drugs turned her into a "manipulator and liar".

She can enjoy her career more now she's healthy, insisting people needn't be bad to be "badass".

"I feel like I’m more rock and roll now because I don’t care," she added.

"When people think of rock and roll, it's like 80s hair bands, sex, drugs but I think it’s so much more badass when you don’t need that stuff to go out and have fun. So I almost feel like that’s more badass than doing just drugs all day."

She's currently in the midst of her tour and will be performing at the Challenge Stadium in Perth tonight. She's made the most of her trip, visiting the Great Barrier Reef and climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge already.
