Sam Smith has confessed he felt “controlled” by food most of his life

The 22-year-old Stay With me singer has had a wonderful year so far after winning four Grammy Awards in February and shedding a significant amount of weight.

But in a frank new interview, Sam admitted he struggled for years with poor eating habits.

“From a young age food has controlled me,” he told Australia’s 60 Minutes. “When I was at school and wasn’t having a great time or when music wasn’t going very well. I would eat, eat. Eating would make me feel better; when I felt lonely, I would eat.”

Sam is openly homosexual and even penned a few of his hit songs about past relationships.

And the I’m Not the Only One hitmaker claims homophobic slurs hurt him less than fat-shaming does.

“If someone called me fat, that affects me way more than someone calling me a f*****," he noted. "I think just because I've accepted that, if someone calls me a f*****, it's like, I am gay and I'm proud to be gay so there's no issues there. But if someone calls you fat, that's something I want to change.”

Fortunately Sam has taken control of his weight issues after working with nutritional therapist Amelia Freer for several months.

On April 17 the musician announced he is very close to reaching his ideal size.

“Beautiful catch up with the incredible @ameliafreer xx 4 pounds away from my goal weight and feel happier and healthier than ever #eatnourishglow (sic),” he shared with fans on Instagram in a caption attached to an image of a thin Sam with a huge smile on his face.
